In the Centre of Neurology and Neurosurgery we have much experience in the diagnosis and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, which, coupled with the modern medical-diagnostic equipment enables the provision of high-tech and complex care to the population of the republic.
The Department hospitalizes patients with rare and complex neurological disorders. It is specialized in the diagnosis and treatment of degenerative and hereditary diseases of the central nervous system, with the range of diseases including:
- Parkinson's disease and juvenile parkinsonism,
- dystonia,
- hepatolenticular degeneration (Wilson's disease),
- cerebellar ataxia,
- hereditary spastic paraplegia,
- Friedreich's ataxia disease,
- essential tremor,
- hereditary myoclonus,
- Huntington's chorea,
- multiple sclerosis and other demyelinating diseases,
- motor neurone disease,
- vascular brain and spinal cord diseases,
- peripheral nervous system diseases (acute and chronic inflammatory polyneuropathies (AIDP, CIDP and others.), neuritis, neuropathy, neuralgia, tunnel syndromes, plexopathy),
- neurological manifestations of spondylosis.
The diagnosis of neurological diseases is performed involvong instrumental techniques such as electroneuromyography, electroencephalography (EEG), ambulatory monitoring of EEG (Holter-EEG), polysomnography, auditory, visual, cognitive, somatosensory evoked potentials, otoneurological examination, ultrasonography of brachiocephalic arteries, magnetic resonance and computer tomography, X-ray examinations, vestibulometric (neurootologic) study and stabilometric study, which are performed in the diagnostic units of the Center.
Treatment of diseases is carried out according to the approved clinical protocols. Currently the treatment of patients with Parkinson's disease and some other neurodegenerative diseases (especially, generalized dystonia) in the department involves neurosurgeons to assess indications for surgical treatment.
For the treatment of focal dystonia we apply a highly effective method, a local injection of botulinum toxin type A. We are able to perform botulinum toxin type A treatment for rare and complex forms of dystonia:
- oromandibular dystonia;
- camptocormia;
- limb dystonia;
- writer's cramp.
- laryngeal dystonia (using electromyographic monitoring).
We widely use course treatment of patients with the dystonia with transcranial magnetic stimulation.
