Priority directions of activity are the following:
- Arteriovenous malformations (AVM) of the brain and spinal cord;
- Arteriovenous fistulae of various localizations;
- Saccular, fusiform and dissecting aneurysms of cerebral vessels;
- Dissections, atherosclerotic stenosis of brachiocephal and cerebral vessels;
- Inta- and extracranial tumors, tumors of vertebral body, and spinal canal;
- Acute thrombosis of cerebral vessels and sinuses;
- Profuse nosebleeding.
The department is equipped with a modern angiographic complex (Artis Zee biplane produced by Siemens, Germany). This device is equipped with the following innovational software: 2D-3D-roadmapping, DynaCT, 3D-InSpace, etc. which allow carrying out modern diagnostic tests and surgical interventions. We utilize disposable accessory products manufactured by the leading producers of medical equipment in Europe, USA and Japan.
Diagnostic interventions and surgeries are performed by highly skilled specialists, who possess a significant experience and have been trained in leading European clinics.
The endovascular treatment includes embolizing and occluding the pathologic vessels and abnormal formations (AVM, arteriovenous fistulae, aneurysms, abundantly blood supplied tumors) with various materials and devices (adhesive compositions, non-adhesive embolizing systems (Onyx), balloons, micro spirals, isolating and changing RSS stents), as well as restoring lumen of damaged or narrowed vessels by the use of angioplasty and stenting, clot extraction, selective intraarterial thrombolysis. It is possible to perform low traumatic intervention on the pathological focus and significantly alleviate a serious illness, at times even completely cure the patient with the help of this method through a small puncture of skin and an artery (preferably femoral artery). A term of stay in a hospital is rather short and is about 3 to 10 days.
There is a number of specific disorders of central nervous system that can be treated only with the help of minimally invasive endovascular methods. For example, such abnormalities as large arteriovenous malformation, carotid-cavernous and arterio-sinuses fistulae, large and gigantic saccular cerebral aneurysms.
The Department operates in close cooperation with other departments of RRCC of Neurology and neurosurgery. The Endovascular Department staff performs all the spectrum of modern endovascular treatment methods of neurosurgical vascular pathology in adults and in children. The staff conducts medical and scientific-research work over problems of vascular neurosurgery and neurooncology, over improving the methods of endovascular treatment of vascular pathology. The question of either direct or endovascular surgery to conduct in order to treat cerebral arterial aneurysms, AVM including those in acute period of hemorrhages is discussed collegially. Some patients with neurooncological illnesses go through pre-surgical embolization of abundantly vascularized tumors, such as tumors of skull base – paragangliomas, meningeomas, gemangioblastomas, craniofacial tumors, nasopharyngeal tumors. Pre-surgical embolization of tumor vessels avoids massive blood loss in the process of tumor removal.
